I have LOTS of rulers and it depends on how many quilts you do annually. Do a little research - some rulers do double duty. Some are unnecessary - just do a little more work on your part. I wouldn't buy special rulers if I was just making baby quilts, but a specialty ruler for a full or queen sized quilt can make a huge difference in your frustration level. That said, I personally avoid rulers that have only black lines as I can't see them on darkish fabric, which is most of my stash.

I guess, give some examples of patterns requiring special rulers? I'm sure posters can tell you what will work and then you can decide when to get one and when not to.

For instance, I love, love, love Eleanor Burns' Flying geese rulers. However, you are limited to only 4 sizes. Is it absolutely necessary? Nope. Since those rulers came out, there are other ways to make Flying Geese that don't require her rulers, although I wouldn't be surprised to find that this method was actually based on her method. I keep mine and recommend them, but if you don't have the $$ or space, not necessary.

I have a lot of different rulers, but the ones I use most are the 8" x 12" and the June Tailor Short Cut.

I doubt I will use1/3 of all of my rulers and I am trying not to buy anymore, but instead of scissors being my addiction, it's rulers! Go figure!!! I've got a 2"x2" up to a 15"x15" and an 8"x24" and then every triangle out there and every specialty ruler too. I'm nuts, truly nuts.
You got me beat. My friend was over the other day and we counted what I have. 25!! The ones I use the most are the 6.5 x 24, the binding tool, and my Wonder Ruler, which makes absolutely perfect half square triangles every time. I just finished about 300 for a quilt with pinwheels, and they all came out great! My latest is the 120 degree ruler, which I just HAD to have!!!!

I just purchased the Tru Cut rulers and really love the ridged guide on them. Check it out. My wrists are a little weak & having a rotary cutter that rides in the ridge keeps me from cutting inaccurately because I wobbled the rotary cutter. As the others said 8x24 is a great size.
