Default Same stash story, too much, and I'm old.

My daughter was in my sewing room and said Mom we need to do something with your stuff. I know it's important to you but honestly do you really need all this now? She asked me to think about it. I was talking to my husband about maybe donating most of my fabric stash to be more organized and less packed away. He said your sewing room is overwhelming, and it may be a problem later on. It's up to you, it's your things. It's not like we can't afford more when you need it so stop worrying about it. He's right. I loved my stash over the years but now not so much. I have a rack for all my new fabric purchases, and they are almost getting old! There is always a fabric sale somewhere, a guild member's moving sale, thrift store finds, etc. I've decided to get rid of the bins and shelves full of fabric, unused notions, boxes of patterns, shelves of books, the machines I don't really use but hey they are great machines. Yeah, they are but I feel like I'm hoarding them because they are great. Let someone else keep them and not use them. LOL Who knows I may sew more with less stuff.

I've been feeling this way too-- too much fabric for my life expectancy! I periodically go through my stash and cull a big pile of fabs that no longer thrill me. Then I sell them on SewItsForSale on Facebook. I've made a lot of money just selling my fabs for $5-6 a yard. My extra sewing machines... I don't know. They are harder to sell because I can't ship them, and would have to sell them locally. So they are mine, for now.

I definitely don't have more fabric than I'll ever need. I think the key word here is need. I don't really live by what I need, I live by more what I want. I'm not a minimalist and have no desire to be. I love my stash, it brings me pleasure. A lot more pleasure than a room that is totally organized and not very homey looking. So I just don't worry about it.

I'm feeling the squeeze in my sewing room too. The space also serves as my office and spare bedroom and it's tiny. I still want to quilt and sew stuff, but I'm going to have to edit soon. There's just not enough space to keep it all. Maybe we should all have a purge-a-thon and post what we got rid of. Misery does love company.

I'm another one that needs to purge fabric, templates, patterns and books, as my hubbby wouldn't know what to do with it all should something happen to me. My three grown children (all in different states) would be the same. It may be time to get a couple decent sized boxes and start to fill them up little by little and drop everything off at the 4 or 5 thrift stores in our area. I want to keep the precuts though because I know all the colors will coordinate with each other. Wish me luck!

My sewing room is certainly overstocked. I let it get ridiculous.

I've got a couple boxes right now sitting by the shelves of fabric and it's time for some of this to go!

Lately I've been going thru my "stuff" and seeing what I haven't used for a long time or ever and gave it to the local thrift shop. Lots of quilting magazines I haven't looked at in probably 5-8 years, they went also, sewing tooks, fabrics, etc. all went to the local thrift shop as they have a quilt auction every 2 years so I know we have quilters in this town. I even donated 2 quilts myself to the last auction. Now that I'm just about done with gifting quilts to those in my congregation and friends, I'm thinking of starting to use up my vast stash to making quilts patterns I've always wanted to make just for the quilt auction. This solves the problem of all those pattern you've always wanted to try plus using up this vast stash of mine. Keeps me busy in the cold months as well in the afternoons of the hot months. And yes, I can always replace it all if I wanted to but I'm now 74 and still have flower and veggie gardens to tend to. I put myself on a "no buying fabric" mode since 2018 when I went on a bus tour and went nuts. I'm now at the point I have a place for all that fabric so I am making progress. I may have to buy a backing or two but I'm trying to use what I have first and then I'll buy them when I see a good sale on them.

I recently tried to tame the chaos of my sewing room. I keep my fabric in totes and the first thing I did was remove the stuffed totes from the room and neatly stacked them in another room. I then started going thru the chaos that was left. I have discovered more than enough projects to last me the rest of my life, without the totes. My stash will definitely out live me. Patterns too. The outcome is my stash just expanded to another room. Not a good idea.
