Try Crag's List. You may find one someone is being forced to get rid of.
First I'd look in local thrift shops for a regular sewing machine if you don't have one.
Sadly, in this economy it is a bad thing to spend that amount for "just a sewing machine" no matter what name it has.

My husband wanted to buy me a new machine for xmas and I told him we need to pay the bills first. I don't have a machine to sew with right now as one broke down not fixable and my old singer has issues with the stitching. I will get my new machine later when we can afford it. I am happy with doing hand sewing for the moment.

I agree with what the other posters have said about the Juki versus a real long arm, but not with putting off buying a LA until you have a job, or have 2 years worth of savings. I've known too many people who have put off, and put off and put off, and then dropped dead once they got to the point where they could "afford" what they wanted. If you don't have a job now you have obviously been making it, and undoubtedly could continue to make it. And, you conceivably could use a true long arm, or even mid arm to generate some income. I say keep looking until you find what you want in a price that doesn't kill you, and GO FOR IT!!

I didn't read through the whole thread before posting, but on the face of it I totally agree with cjomomma. I would not spend that amount of money on a non-essential purchase until my financial situation had stabilized.
