No, those are not HSTs. Could be done that way, but this was more of a snowball type thing.

Here are 2 lap qits, one I call scrappy, the other I do not consider scrappy. Both made from scraps (all fabric was purchased for other quilts) (I do not buy fabric because I like it).

AVFD215, I agree the first one is scrappy, but the second is simply a quilt made from your stash. Both are very nice looking quilts.

I guess I've never thought about a distinction between "scrap" and "scrappy". To my mind, they both use an array of scraps, whether "planned" (specific colorway) or random. Now you've got me thinking....

I think of them as "controlled scrappy" when certain colors are in certain spots in the pattern and scrappy when the colors are totally random. Whether they are scraps or yardage, it's how they are put together.

I use the terms interchangeably. I do a lot of "scrap quilts" but almost always have one constant fabric: gray, white, black or another color. That color might not all be the same fabric either but in the same color family. Say I'm using a pink for the constant: I decide whether it's going to Light or Dark. I make good use of those Red & Green Color helpers for lights & darks. I was taught by family women who used what they had, clothing, feed sacks and IF they bought fabric, they shared the cost. Thrifty to a fault, as it was a lifestyle, not a trendy thing.

Here are some examples of what I consider "scrap quilts".

The pastel star quilt, was made from 2.5" x 4.5" scrap bricks that someone gave me in a shoebox. I just found a pattern that would use them. Don't remember what pattern I used now but it called for 2.5" x 5" bricks. I added the white from my stash.

The Christmas quilt is Bonnie Hunter's "My Blue Heaven", but I call mine, "My Christmas Heaven", and not yet completed. It's made of other people's scraps, and a light constant from my stash. I started it in her workshop at my guild in June (2017).

The Gray/Pink/Green Quilt. The centers of the Square are Scrap Strip blocks and I built around them for the design. The gray fabric I had in my stash, but I bought the Pink Houndstooth and the Green/Pink floral fabrics. I made this one for a new grand-daughter last year. I pieced the back with the leftover fabric.

Scrappy to me. I threw all my squares in a bag and pulled them out one by one and sewed them together in 6 in blocks then threw the blocks in a bag and pulled them out one by one and sewed them together. Found the pattern on here.
