I have the Bernina Artista 630 and it has the Stitch regulator..I would not even attempt to do FMQ without it...it keeps me straight while I am trying to learn this fun way to quilt. It did take a bit of learning curve, to be able to use it well, but it is getting better, the more I do it!

I don't know of any generic stitch regulators but there are generic speed regulators. I have one for my Juki. It allows you to set how fast the machine will sew (top speed is something like 1500 stitches per minute). However, it does NOT assist in ensuring that the length of each stitch is the same.
