I've had sheets that I received for wedding gifts that lasted for 20+ years with regular use. If you want a quilt to be durable and loved and used, by all means go with a sheet for backing. If you want a quilt to hang on exhibit and only be admired and judged, be a purist and stick to fancy quilt fabrics.

I also use sheets as I hate to piece the backing. The looser the weave the easier it is to quilt so I stay away from the high thread count sheets. I recently bought several from Fred Meyers and they were darling....polka dots, animal prints, etc and only $5 each.

Nah, sheets don't count as fabric because they are sold in the Linen Department. Fabric is sold in the Fabric Department

How generous and considerate of the quilt shop! That certainly is spreading good will to her/his customers :-D
