I believe that the child you describe should not have a quilt that is overly busy. It would be very frustrating. I used a disappearing nine patch that hope to be able to show you a picture of.

I've made two. One that looks like jars on a shelf and the other just squares set in black. I made the second one deliberately with two squares of each fabric so it could also serve as a "matching" game for children.

Missouri Star Quilt Co. (and maybe some LQS) sell a layer cake of I Spy fabrics--I'm using that and cut into 4ths (charm squares) as I'm making quilts for 2 oldest g-boys for Christmas--just plan plain 5" sq. with solid sashing/borders. I bought a bag of juvenile print scraps from my local Guild's "garage" sale last fall to add to it. Will leave me with enough for future quilts (g-children too young for full size quilts).

I've been trying to save squares for an I Spy quilt for our DGD, but I don't have enough to even start one yet. When I was cutting squares, I cut two of each fabric so she can play a matching game as well. I just hope she's not too old by the time I finish making the quilt.
