Singer 404...Does it have a gease tube? Sticky/noisy handwheel!
#1

Does anyone know if the motor on a 404 has a grease tube to fill like the 301 does? Also, does anyone have any idea why the motor spins quietly and smoothly when I spin the gears with the handwheel off, but when I put the hand wheel on, it is stiff and noisy? It is greased up and clean, and the assembly is pretty straight forward. Can't imagine I put it together wrong. Please give me insight so I can go on with my life. I've been working on this for two days. :(

I can't answer this, but I'm surprised nobody tried. Suggest a PM to the vintage sewing machine guy, Billy, lostn51. I stumbled on your message just now because I have a Bernina that is overheating when I FMQ for too long without giving it a break, and I was searching for info about grease tubes.
Maybe your problem is beyond the motor - the belt or a damaged gear elsewhere?
