I prefer hand sewing my binding to the back of the quilt compared to machine stitching as it hides the stitches pretty well. Is hand stitching the way to go if I'm making a bed quilt for my daughter? Does it hold up as well as machine stitching?

I also prefer to blind stitch the binding. Is this as good as slip stitching?

Is there any difference whether I attach the binding to the front or the back of the quilt first?

I generally sew the binding to the front on the machine and hand sew to the back with blind stitching. I wash my quilts pretty often and have not had an issue with the stitching coming undone. When I do charity quilts, I usually machine stitch to the back and use a decorative machine stitch on the front to sew down the binding for extra durability. I prefer the other way for my own though - I like the look better. Do what you are comfortable with!

you do your bindings the 'traditional' way- and yes--they hold up just fine. your invisible stitch is fine too...and as for the front to back vs. back to front? people do it both ways- which ever way you want is fine..no one will know except you.

I put the hand binding through an ultimate test...toddler quilt. ;) That poor little quilt has been through everything, including the washing machine and dryer daily.I attach by machine on the front and attach by hand on the back. I miter my corners and prefer to have that look on the back. But hand binding will hold, don't worry about that! If anything it's easy to repair a stitch or two.

I machine the front and blind stich to the back, never had a problem and I have some quilts that are used daily, tossed on the floor, thrown at across the room, used as rugs for legos. Never a problem

Thanks ladies for all your replies! Feel reassured to hear that and will do my hand sewing and blind stitch as I normally do. :)
