Rectangular seems to make the most sense to me for bed quilts or lap quilts. Guess art or wall quilts it wouldn't matter much.

Depends on the pattern. Some look awesome square, others rectangular. I like a rectangular one to cuddle with on the couch, but for bed, square.

Square for a bed or lounging on a couch I want it longer so my feet aren't sticking out. For a baby or wall hanging I don't mind square.

I think squares look better usually but aren't as practical to me. I only make rectangular ones.

Bed quilts should fit the bed. A queen or king bed is near enough to square that a square quilt has the advantage of being able to go on the bed in any direction, which can help it wear longer.
