So, my dh bought me a new sewing machine (its a basic model Janome 8077) about 2 weeks ago.

I have 2 dogs, a Maltese and a Papillon. I used to go upstairs and the dogs went with me and laid in their bed(s). Well, when I got the new machine, about the same time, my Papillon decided he couldn't stay in the room with me....I thought at first, something had happened and he was scared. He leaves the room, and if the baby gate is at the bottom of the steps (to keep them upstairs with me) then he goes to the lowest step and lays there. If he can get downstairs, he stays on the couch....so strange!

But now, I'm thinking, this new machine must have a different sound, or a high pitched whine, that I can't hear, and he can??? I wonder if that's possible.

This dog has really sensitive hearing - he hears things and barks at them and its the smallest noise. When a plane goes overhead, he always looks up - I've never seen another dog do that.

Just curious if anyone else has ever had a reaction like this from a pet???

you are probably correct about the high pitched sound that only he can hear...

I don't think so. He was fine up there for hours before. And, he goes up with me willingly....he just doesn't stay there when the machine starts.

Thanks for the replies. Glad to know, someone elses dog looks up at planes too! :D

You are probably right. My dog will not stay in the room with me when I am on the Nordic Trac, he runs around like crazy too. We realized it was the sound the belt on the wheel makes.

I'm sure it's the sound of your new machine. My DS has a black lab that goes in the basement when she runs her new dishwasher. She now washes dishes by hand and Thor stays in the same room!

My dog didn't like the vacumn cleaner. She would attack it and try and bite it. We decided to take up our carpets and have wood and tile floors now.

I used to have an air compressor to blow out my HQ16. Now they say that is a big nono. Anyhow my cats would run as soon as I picked up the hose, before it was even turned on. Run from the vacuum too.

When I got my new Husqvarna Sapphire 870 the same thing happened with my dog. As soon as I turn it on it starts up & repositions & up he jumps from his dog bed. I feel bad for him, because it's always been his favourite spot when I'm in there.
