When I first started quilting 12+ years ago, I bought fabric that struck my fancy--no rhyme or reason... Now I buy fabrics that go together--mostly fall colors, but usually buy 3 to 5 colors that would go together but not blend or be monochromatic. I try to only buy when I have a pattern in mind, but I always seem to find a few fabrics that I just must have and get a few yards of each for my stash and future use...
My two favorite fabric lines are fairy frost and thimbleberries.

I think it's only natural that one's taste would change a bit over time. That would be sort of like a musician who gets tired of one genre and moves to another. But I would also expect that a person could also change back to those original tastes!

My taste has expanded - not necessarily changed, and I still dislike the same patterns and fabrics I always disliked.

I have changed from super - traditional, to drafting my own patterns and making 'Art Quilts'.

I started quilting in 1969, when there were no books, no quilt shops, and just one quilt magazine. It was difficult finding 100% cotton, since so much was poly/cotton.

I usually made traditional patterns, with a formuka: one calico, one plaid or check, and a solid background, often muslin. My first 100 quilts were made with fabric cut out with scissors, all hand sewn and hand quilted.

I have to say that my quilting, along with the entire craft, has changed dramatically. I'm a longarm quilter now, quilting for the public. I love traditional patterns, but I don't like making sampler quilts any more.

I often make radiant designs, one big central star or one big tree. I have thousands of yards of fabric. I use fabrics and colors that one could only dream of in 1969.

In my perfect world, I could start over with my fabric collection. I seem to change often with regard to what colors and styles appeal to me. I have lots of traditional looking fabrics and I still love that style, but now I'm into applique and brighter colors. I love things with deep contrast. I can only hope my daughter will develop a taste for the fabrics I have and she'll take them off my hands. (She's only just begun this lifelong journey.)

I rhink we all go thru different stages of patterns and fabrics. When I did my first quilt about 25 years ago, colors were more dusty, the colors for the most part weren't as crisp as they are today. I gave away a lot of that fabric because it was so dated and I like the new bright colors. I's sure in a few years I will swing another way.

Yes, I thought I had possibly had one of those "breakdowns" Whew! Glad to see I am once again OKAY. I have changed so much through the years - ART, where I use to like "exact images" the art I now love is more Monet impressionist styles, .... what I read, activities I do, movies, books, and of course, fabric, quilt, magazines and not just quilting magazines - I have stopped almost all subscriptions. So often, the criteria is TIME and I think of the EFFORT it would take. I won't waste my valuable TIME in meetings, committee assignments, I am learning to say NO - so yes,yes, I am CHANGING and I think it is TIME!

Hi judylg: You too? Started out loving Fasset's wild colors and designs (and easy patterns)...but now have migrated to Civil War to 1890s, and early 20th century.
Still not so crazy about the 1930's vintage look...but it's working on me! : - D
IF I could get hold of a "Hello Betty" charm pack (62 pieces) for a Dresdin Plate pattern this would surely change I'm sure! BUT I discovered it too late...all gone. Does anyone know of any other large charm packs? It would be fun to try out my first dresdin plate. One of these days...

Still love the old traditional patterns and soft muted country colors, scrappy quilts but like some of the new stuff too. Love plaid flannels and log cabins.
