I use Jan's method too, and it's a great basic method.
If I need more than 2 HSTs of the same fabrics, for example for a Carpenter's Wheel, I draw a much larger grid on my fabrics. The little extra time needed to draw lines on the fabric is worth it to me, in terms of accuracy and happiness. It's great to see 8 HSTs arrive at the same time!!

It all depends on how many I need to make. If I need a lot then I do paper piecing with something like Thangles. If just a few then I do the same as Jan in VA. I love my That patchwork Place/Martingale Bias Squareup Ruler for this as it is well marked and in 1/4" increments.

Agree that Jennys videos are great. She inspires many a new quilter. However I've found her method of sewing all the way around 2 squares hard for a newbie to handle the bias edges that are stretchy. Quick and easy sometimes can be a quick way to frustration later. I think for a newbie to hst's the best way would be the way Jan had suggested in a previous post or by using HST paper. The draw back to papers is that they too can be stretched out of shape when ripping off the paper. Please don't attack me I love Jennys tutorials, and watch them all. The best way to find the method that works for you is to try them all on some scrap fabric. You many end up liking Jenny's method and be better able to handle the bias edges than I could, after all I'm no expert like Jenny!

I use JanInVA's method .... making a larger grid if doing more than one HST, which is usually the case.
For those wanting the Triangulations method ... the PP patterns are on QuiltersCache.com ... only cost is for you to print them out. Just be sure to check the measurements and adjust accordingly.
