I think I saw it on Alex Anderson's tv show.

I remember that show and the lady astronaut. She could fill a small pouch with any personal items she wanted take to space and her quilt block was one of them.
This is what I remember too -- they put a pattern on their web site that was a Hawiian style version of the shuttle. I printed it off, but did not ever get to it.

Quilters could probably fund a trip to space.

Just think of all we've done over the centuries, temperance movement (OK, so it was a disaster), the vote for women, abolition of slavery, comfort and care of wounded soldiers, the list goes on and on.

I have searched and searched and couldn't find it. I looked on Google, but I'm not very good at it. This is what I remember. The quilt was red and white and had a stylized shuttle on it. She asked that no one copy the shuttle as it symbolized being in space. The pattern was free and could be made without the shuttle. In my search last night and this am I think her name was Jan Davis and her husband was also an astronaut and they were the first husband and wife team to go on a mission. Maybe some of you super computer gals can find it. I printed the pattern, but never did anything with it and now I can't find it. Can't believe I threw it out, but I did purge a few years ago.

I thought I had heard that one of the female astronauts was a quilter and was an applique person.

Did a quilt ever make the journey into space?[/quote]

Here you go! Dr. Jan Davis, who is from my home town, is the quilter.
