Bought a little booklet called, "Tiny Obsessions" by Vickie Bellino and saw the cutest pattern for 1/4" hexies in making a flower magnet....yep!....1/4"!... had just watched Becky Goldsmith's video (from Piece of Cake website mentioned above) where she illustrated how to use a glue pen instead of needle and thread and it works like a charm. I admire all of you who cut out each paper piece by hand but I order mine from www.paper pieces.com. Incidentally they, also, carry the plastic templates should you like to make your own , ppaper pieces. Have fun!

Another thought...you could see if it's something you would enjoy by making just one or two of the flowers and appliqueing them to a bag, purse, etc. just to get the feel of it.

I love doing hexies. I gather all the colors I want to use cut the pieces out then sew together. No paper. Nice on the go project or just take outside and relax in the shade for an afternoon. Just finished a small table runner.Bright,full of color. Have lots of flowers made for a quilt but not quite done yet. A good scrap project.

Hi Scrappy Gram. I think I have seen a tute on this method for making hexagons. Don't you do some folding, first in half, then work you way around? Then fold down the edges? Sure didn't explain that well!! My question is, do you sew the hexies together, much like Bellaboo discribes. only sewing on the creases? Sounds interesting.

I have no short cuts because I love the whole process of making hexagons. It surprised me that I did when I made my first hexagon quilt.

I am making a GFG quilt with hexies. I use the cardboard hexies for the inside form. I cut the fabric into 2.5 inch squares and clip off the corners - reduces the bulk. I hold the fabric to the hexie form with a paper clip or two, no holes or glue to deal with. I found the 1 inch hexie pattern on texasfreckles web site, copied it and cut the hexies with an old rotary cutter. Fast and clean. I am making the flowers with a center and coordinating petals. I did cut some fabric that does not fit so I am making another top with those. The GFG flowers are going to be surrounded with white and connected with green. I am new at this, just started in March this year and love the process - and I used to hate hand sewing! I do hexies, flowers, and connections when I feel like it. And I do not press until the flower is done, the fabric gives better when not pressed. Just my way of doing it - and I did not like the ladder stitch and went back to the whip stitch, it seems to hold better. The idea of connecting the flowers together before it gets too unwieldy is a good idea, must try that. I found using an appliqué needle and fine thread works great. Other tips - I anchor the corners together so they do not come apart. Sorry for the long message, but thought someone could use the info that I found useful.

I make the templates out of wadding and completely encase each unit as if it were a mini quilt. I do the quilting on each unit and then join them all together - usually with whip stitch. It is manageable because there is no final quilting to do when it is finished.

About a month ago, I purchased a Hexagon Paper Punch made by Fiskars....actually, Bonnie Hunter recommended it through Joann's! I love it! It makes hexie cutting a breeze. I bought a stack of index cards from Walmarts...I get 6 cut hexies from a card. Then I pin it to a small piece of roughly cut fabric and just do a tacking stitch (3 stitches) and then I go around the hexie---seems like the same amount of time as using the glue stick! Needless to say, I'm stitching up a lot of neutral beige/tans to encircle green and pink middles! Love to do it in the car while waiting for my daughter!

Many have said the punches are available, though I have yet to find them at Michael's or scrapbooking supplies.

As a hint, instead of buying index cards, many people use the cards that come in magazines or old greeting cards.
