Which thread for quilting?
Hello! I’m starting my first quilt and have always used gutermann thread for sewing. Anyone have thoughts on which thread type to use? I think I need 60 weight thread? Of course this brand and several others don’t show weight.

Be sure your needle size fits the thread size. A 60wt thread will need a 70/11 needle. Long stable Egyptian Cotton thread is the best choice for less thread frustration. I use poly thread for the bobbin most times.

you don't need #60 weight for quilting. On the long arm I use mostly SoFine #50 and save the #60 and thinner wt. for when I'm going to do lots of fill work and microquilting. A 40 or 50 wt. is fine. Just be sure to match your needle size to the thread thickness. Most threads will indicate the needle needed. If you are FMQ quilting on your DSM with a #40 wt thread you might want to try a size 14 topstitch needle

If you want the quilting to stand out, use a heavier weight thread (such as 40 wt). If you want the piecing to stand out and the quilting to be a little less noticeable, use a finer weight thread (such as 60 or even 100 wt). Make sure to match the needle size to the thread weight.
Poly threads will be less linty than cotton threads.

If we're talking piecing (sewing the top together), I use 50 wt. (usually Gutermann or Masterpiece) or 60 wt. Presencia (the Presencia seems thicker than other threads). For quilting the 3 layers together by machine, I use 40 wt. For hand quilting the 3 layers together, I use hand quilting thread, which is thicker and more wiry than regular sewing thread.

Gutermann replied, and very quickly, to my inquiry. This was their recommendation...
