Default How Do You Know It's Time. To Take the Machine In?

I have a Brother SE400 I got December 2011. I clean the bobbin area every time I change a bobbin. The past week or so the machine has been sounding choppy. The top thread breaks, almost shreds. The bottom thread nests. This doesn't happen every time but more like every twenty minutes so I can get some sewing done. I've rethreaded it every time it happens. Has anyone ever had this happen?

My Bernina likes a drop of oil on the bobbin race when the little symbol pops up. Can you see a spot for a drop of sewing machine oil on your bobbin hook?

I agree that you should check out the oil situation. Does yours need oil?

i would start with getting out my owners manual & reading the 'maintenance/cleaning' section- go through the process step by step- when we don't do it regularly it's easy to forget a step or two- then i would go to the 'trouble shooting' section of the manual & read through the specific issues- what to do-
if all that does not work then it's time for a service call....and do you change your needle often? sometimes something as simple as that can make a huge difference

As others have said, you could try oiling the bobbin case area, change your needle, and rethread the machine both top and bottom and see if that helps. It has been a year and a half since you got your machine, so if you sew a lot, it probably could be time to get your machine cleaned professionally. Usually about every year-two is often enough, but if you really sew a lot, they recommend every 6 months.

Did you change the needle? I know I have to change needle when mine does that.

Have you checked your spool of thread when this happens? I found that with mine if I got to sewing too fast and then stopped suddenly when the thread was at the bottom of the spool it would wind itself around the spool pin a few times and then break. Took me awhile to figure out this was happening. Hope yours is an easy fix too even if this is not your problem.
