A few yrs ago I visited the Underground RR Quilt Museum in Atlanta. I knew the stories and controversies about the stories. The granddaughter of the quilter who originally told the stories owned the museum and store. Her family quilts were hanging around the walls. In her explanation of the blocks she pointed to the "Sunbonet Sue" block and said that meant for the escapee to wear a white woman's bonnet so they would not be noticed. Now the Sunbonet Sue was not "invented" until the 1930's. I found this interesting and left.

HI all I did an underground railroad quilt in a class I took here in my home town, it was the winter that my husband was dying from lung cancer. each week when I went to class and then made the blocks, my grandson and my darling husband would discuss the 2 or 3 blocks that I had made and decide if they liked them or not. I did get the top done that winter and they both loved it. My DH passed away in the spring, so in the fall I quilted it and gave it to my grandson for Xmas, and he is so proud of the quilt that he and grandpa talked about all that winter. I was a beautiful quilt and I used more darker colors and muted fabric like you would have had if you had made it in the 1800's. It is a very precious memory for me.

What a beautiful story. Your Grandson has a treasure and wonderful memories of not only Grampa, but of a wonderful Gramma who thought so much of his she gave him such a gift.

Very nice, love the color combo's. And the backing is awesome! My husband too is CW fan, should be with his master's degree in early America.

The colors are all browns and tans and that's not my style, but I'm intregued by the story and just love reading the book. Has anyone made one of these quilts and what else do you know about the quilts and the story? Is this a true story or something that's been embellished over time? Does anyone have a quilt that is said to have been used for this and want to share the story?
This is a common myth. There is absolutely no historical evidence to support it. Without some supporting evidence, these remain just stories.
