I have made polyester double knit quilts any time I've had double knit fabric. I give them to people in homeless shelters that have no heat at night. They are really warm and durable. I made one, a Broken Dishes pattern, on the serger, and a number of people wanted it. I've made others, and also backed cotton quilts with double knit, which I think then needs to be quilted rather than tied. I made and kept one king size double knit quilt, and it has been used on the couch, on the bed, and for camping trips daily for 18 years. A couple seams popped and I fixed them, but it's still going strong. A 100 percent serged cotton quilt I made the same year has just been retired. I find that a Singer 401 handles these heavy quilts easily as well.

One thing I did learn: use the same weight of double knit for all parts. A lighter weight will eventually tear.

Oh, gosh, this brings back memories! I cut the legs off my polyester doubleknit slacks right after marrying Mr. Braun. He loved to drive to Galveston or Crystal Beach and park on the beach (that was when you could). I sewed those pieces of legs together and made our beach quilt. We tied a knot in the corner and rolled up the window on his little Subaru on that, tied knots on the other three corners and used broom handles, etc. to stake them up in the sand! We put our recliners under it with our cooler and enjoyed the breezes from the water! We looked like bedouins - the photos are very colorful!not the salt water, ocean breeze, sand, etc. ever hurt that quilt! It's still somewhere in his workshop! I lost him in June and it is wonderful to recall that memory! Thanks!

double knit polyester fabrics make great lap quilt if making the fabric cuts into charms. The last forever or close to it and wear well. The will stain easily but who is going to notice.

That’s all my mother ever made quilts out of all four of my daughters got one and they will outlast any cotton one anywhere. They were all tied with yarn and if your looking at the weighted blanket out there are dk ones will do the same thing. I have 4 left of the church ladies quiltswe made here in my house b4 we moved in. I’ll have to find someone that needs one and give them one.
