this is certainly not true of the ladies who work the fabric dept of our local walmart. they're friendly, helpful, and are always happy to see their customers. AND they remember the regulars. when there's a bit left over, they always ask if i want it before they cut.

The WM in our area closed their fabric dept. We did not have a fabric shop locally so we had to travel 40 t0 90, miles or order on line to get supplies.
We called WM, e-mailed WM, wrote WM in our local area and headquarters all
to no avail. They were the only fabric store we had for 5, years, guess we hand quilters just don't quilt fast enough for them. Our machine quilters need to quilt faster also.
So, Thanks to JoAnn we now have a fabric/craft store in our area.

For anyone who is interested in doing so, you may contact Walmart corporate HQ through wallmart.com. This is what I sent them today:

I am a member a very large international group of quilters who have a discussion forum on Quiltingboard.com and am writing to express our collective extreme disappointment that so many Walmart stores have discontinued their fabric departments and that there are plans to do the same in many other, if not all, Walmarts throughout the United States. For as long as I can remember Walmart has been the go-to location for affordable fabric and sewing notions, not only for quilters but also for those who sew clothing, crafts and home decor items. Despite the resurgent popularity of quilting and home sewing Walmart has chosen to turn its corporate back on those of us who have patronized your stores for so many years. We want you to reconsider this unfortunate decision and bring back this offering. We are compiling a list of Walmart stores that still sell fabric so that we can post this on our quilting board's website as a reference for our members. I would greatly appreciate it if you would email that information to me. Thank you very much. I look forward to your response.

I will be very surprised if I get a respons from them but will definitely post it if I do.

I just got the newest Walmart quilt of the month. I's called 'Memories' . I just loved the fabrics! I do like doing most of them if I like toe colors and feel of the fabric. I made 2 tops at my last retreat that were quilts of the month and had lots of complements on them. My fellow quilters didn't believe they were from Walmart !

I would imagine that Walmart's decision to discontinue fabric is financial, just like with the local quilt shops. But they have clothing, automotive, etc. to fall back to bolster their profits, so they stay in business. They didn't get to be the retail monster they are without keeping a close eye on the bottom line. Be interested to know what they say!

I have the quilt in mind I'm using fabric for.

It will be a quilt to be used for the porch swing. Simple and certainly no heirloom.
