Be careful of the surface before you try this method. We did it before the coatings they use now.

I use a couple of thick paper towels so the waxed coating doesn't build up on the ironing board cover (I learned the hard way that it can scorch if you just let it build up.) Put a four square folded sheet of waxed paper on it. Heat dry iron, run iron over the waxed paper, turning over to use both sides of the waxed paper --you will end up with a stiff piece of waxed paper and an iron that is ready to glide. I like this on my stainless steel soleplate. Then every month I clean my soleplate with IRON OFF if I have been using fabric spray of any sort.

Had glue from piecing stuck to the iron it was quite a mess, nothing seemed to work then I remembered the salt I heated the iron then rubbed it in the salt which I had put on baking paper on my bread board. rubbed with a circular motion in the salt and after a while the goo started to come off bonded to the salt every so often I gave the Iron a wipe down with damp cloth then repeat the process took about 20mins. word of warning if iron is teflon or non stick coated this process will take the coating off.

Just mix a little baking soda and water (to create a thick paste) and rub it on the cold, dry iron. Then wipe it off with a clean rag. Works great.

Next time, try a used dryer sheet (has to be used, not new) to get fusible adhesive off your soleplate. Works with much less effort and time than salt for that particular problem.
