Congratulations to a fellow Tar Heel! Way TO GO!! Tate, your post brought back memories of Mama's 501a. What a wonderful machine. I had it for a few years along with it's cabinet. One day at school (work), I went through the cafeteria and chatted with a friend who worked there. Just catching up, she told me she spent her weekend sewing drapes BY HAND. The more I thought about that, the more I knew Mama would want her to have her machine. I wasn't using it at all and didn't foresee using it either even though I loved it. So I called her and offered her the machine cabinet and all. She was floored! I have no regrets but sometimes I just miss seeing Mama's machine! It was a real work horse with lots of bells and whistles, a rare combination these days of plastic instead of metal along with circuit boards that can not be replaced.

I know first hand how your wife feels! Way back in 1985, I went on a quilt retreat a won the Grand Prize which was a brand new Elna. I sewed the bobbins off of that machine!!! And once you sew on a "good" machine you can't go back to your old clunkers. I have worked my way up to a Bernina and I am in love....but it all started with the lucky day I won my Elna.....she went down doing me proud!!!!!!!
