I haven't found a brand of thread I don't have at least one spool of. I have one spool of hand dyed thread from England $12 for 100 yards. It was a door prize at quilt shop opening. The shop never did sell one spool of the stuff and she ordered lots of it. The owner wanted only the best of the best but forgot who her customers would be. (the shop went under in less then two years) I like all the good brands. I use Connecting Threads cotton and their new poly the most and I like Fil Tec, Superior, Coats and Clark, Guttermann, Star, YLI, Robin Anton, InvisiFil, Signature, and Sulky. Aurifil is good but not worth the price to me. I ask for samples at thread vendors when I go to quilt shows. Most will have a sample packs put back for sale. My machines will sew with all of the brands of threads. I do love machine quilting with silk thread. It's like sewing with air. Superior had a great introductory sale for their new line of silk and I stocked up.

Have also seen Masterpiece from Superior Threads highly recommended for piecing. It seems to me it is very similar to Aurifil, and I think I figured out that Aurifil is cheaper.
King Tut is often recommended for machine quilting. It is a little thicker than Aurifil and 3-ply instead of 2-ply. I am going to try the Aurifil variegated for machine quilting, but I'm tempted by the King Tut as it would be a stronger thread. It's just that it is about twice as expensive as the Aurifil on sale.

i have lots of coats & clark and gutterman thread left over from my days of making clothes...I have been using it up in my quilt tops. I'm less picky with what i sew my quilt tops with. What i am picky about is why i hand quilt with - YLI glazed cotton thread. Sadly, no one around here sells it :( I have to order it online

I just love Aurifil thread. I've found what I think are the best prices at www.jhittlesewing.com. I generally order once a year and purchase enough for free shipping. Not affiliated with them in any way, just a happy customer.

My quilting friends suggested Superior threads to me. I've never had a problem with it. They have a wonderful website and newsletter educating you about threads. My LQS owner likes Prescenia (sure not spelled right).
