Shadows are duller, darker, grayer versions of the color the thing making the shadow is standing on. Your shadow on a white sandy beach is a dull beige, in a deep forest it would be dark umber, and on you lush green lawn it would be dark, dull green. In your applique, it all depends on the background fabric. It is the background color with less light, less intensity, less color.

I would use a darker, duller mat tone of the fabric that you use in the applique to give shadow and depth to the image...but what do I know lol :D

Without seeing what you are actually doing...I'd use a complimentary color.

Thanks so much for all your great suggestions. I used the back of a fabric that is a light blue/gray, and it looks great. I was trying to scan a picture of this to send, but can't get it to work. (Operator Malfunction again)
Thanks for all your help.

All I know is that when I was doing an oil painting of a bunch of oranges I used blue for the shadows.

The problem with shadows is texture. Unless high contrast, like under a streetlamp at night, the objects on which the shadow is cast show. Whatever color you choose, if the quilt isn't going to get rough wear, the shadow might be translucent applique over the background or the shadow parts an overdye of the background fabric(s).
