I get the best results by cutting my own strips and *not* ironing them in half before applying. Not ironing the fold allows the binding to fold over the edge easier -- inner side of binding takes less fabric than outer side of binding.

I've only used a blanket stitch, but I think I need to start using all the other special stitches on my machine so they don't go to waste!

My favorite is the "connecting" stitch. I think it was originally designed to sew two pieces of fabric together when you had them parallel to each other. On my new Elna, it is stitch 049. It seems to be a stitch on most all of the machines. I have it on 4 different machines. It makes a stitch on one side of the "center line" and the next stitch is on the opposite side . It covers a lot of ground quickly and securely fastens the binding down. I use this stitch for a lot of "in the ditch" quilting, as well. If you veer off center, it is not very obvious! I am hoping the attached pictures will show the stitch. Actually it shows up best in the middle photo.
