It is a sad truth that a lot of beautiful things can be produced in other countries and shipped here cheaper than we can produce them.

I was in an Amish shop last weekend and the quilts were made by the local women but the quilt tops were sent to China to be hand quilted. The stitches aren't tiny at all and I was surprised that the Amish would want their work to be done this way. The woman in the shop said the women didn't have time to handquilt for the public, they saved their handquilting for family quilts and only sold those if there was a big money need. I bought a beautiful baby quilt for $95 and it has a label handquilted in China. The Amish still gets the money for the quilt sold.

Maybe we should all read some of what it says. Saying something is hand made is not necessarily going to mean it was made in USA.

This looks like they could be doing the same with quilts.

But...you could always tell they were from China because try as they may, the eyes were always slanted a bit! My mom used to collect antique dolls and we could spot one from China immediately!

I clicked to the site you linked just to see. All I could find was " A few Hmong women have begun to combine their traditional needlework with American styles of appliqué. In some case, Amish and Hmong women have shared their techniques." I don't read this as having the Hmong do their quilts for years.

Thank you for the link. It has some very interesting information on it. I knew this was going on but didn't think they were being sold by QVC and other such stores. I have 2 of them and have enjoyed them but now that I make my own quilts they will probably go in the closet.

Amen! A friend of mine (non quilter) bought a "handmade" quilt from China and it fell apart after 2 washings!
