What's the difference between a crumb quilt and a crazy quilt? Just curious.

From what i've seen here - crumb quilts are crazy quilts made with itty bitty teeny tiny scraps.

Crazy quilts are heavily embellished and the crumb ones are plain?

My understanding is crumb quilts are made with small squares. Crazy quilts are made with a variety of sizes and shapes. The above is just what I have seen.

This is pretty much it. Crazy quilt originally would have been embellished in the older days, but not necessarily now. The crumb quilt pieces can be any shape but are really small, like snippets or such. It is all a design choice.

I think of a crumb quilt as just the material pieces connected together. A crazy quilt is using the shape of the scrap and adding fancy stitching around the edges. Often the quilt includes velvet in some patches. I have one my Gma made that even has some of my Aunt's chilhood hair ribbons and field day ribbons included.

I think the difference is embellishment. Crazy quilts are embellished along the seams and often on some of the patches. Embroidery floss ribbons and lace are commonly used. Also the antique crazy quilts often used luxurious fabrics such as silks, satins, velvets and brocades.

I thought crumb quilts were made with quilt squares using all those little clippings and cuttings you have leftover after rotary cutting. Then you sew those together to make a block. It's kind of "crazy"! I could be wrong though...it wouldn't be the first time! Someone posted a beautiful blue and red one recently.

Crumbs are crazy small so you'd be crazy to make one. Lol.
