I used to do smocking too in the late 60's and early 70's for my daughters' dresses. I don't think I could do it again today. Forgotten how. But my poor DDs were smocked up one side and down the other...I loved doing it.

I started sewing when I was 7 years. I first learned tacking, then running, hemming, top sewing. I was in 2nd class and the sewing was stitched into a scrapbook of different colored pages. The sewing inspector came to the school every year. The first item I made was an apron.

Ummm, I was in 7th grade Home Ec. and the first thing was a smock pillow. Red and white gingham :) Then came the Broom Skirt with a Square neck top! lol that was the most horrid thing ever! But I loved sewing and took all thru Junior High and High School!

That was the top that I had to make to go with the Broom Skirt! it had buttons on the shoulder to fasten on. In 7th grade I would of been 11 going on 12 thinking. the year would of been 1960. wow how time flies!! hehehe

The first thing I even remember doing with a needle and thread was embroidering a hankerchief for my dad with his initials on it. I must have only been 7 or 8.

Do you know that when he passed away we found it at the TOP of his drawer with his other hankys and mom told me that he would carry it with him all the time :-)

The embroidery is absolutely horrible and it is obvious that it is the first thing I ever did but it makes me feel so special that he was the one who taught me how to do that and he loved something so simple so much :-)

A pair of pants when I was 10. My mother made me take sewing lessons. I hated it and swore I would never touch a sewing machine again for as long as I lived. Really stuck to my guns on that one, huh?

I was probably 6 or 7 sitting on my grandma's lap sewing on her treadle machine, that my DM still has. I can't remember what I was making, but I was always helping her sew. I made a beach bag with a BIG chicken on the front of it when I was 10 and I still have it and use it. I also started making my own clothes, wrap-a-round skirts. I took home ec., making a lined corduroy skirt and vest. I also made my own clothes in high school for all special events or dances. I only make clothes for my two youngest DGD's now since the quilting bug has taken ahold.
