If you have a Jo-Ann's in your town, so what?? If you don't have a Jo-Ann's but do have a Wal-Mart, YEA! If you don't have either, so what?

No it WOULD NOT be a good thing...they already have too much of the market share, they have gobbled up too many other fabric store....thats called a monopoly. I've just recently had to go to walmart to buy Heat and BOnd lite because Joanns no longer carries it..they now carry some cheap plastic type of Pellon as its replacment.

Wal Mart got rid of some fabric departments and a class action law suit MADE them put them back, ladies said if they have sporting goods we we want fabric/crafts so they have put some back in. Our new family supercenter has a fabric/craft department and a lot of materal, but no more than old store. But up here in W central FL nearest JoAnn's or any other fabic store is 25 miles south (Spring Hill) or 40+ miles NW in Ocala. We have one fabric store and they sell same material as EM for $1-2 yard more but are great for other kinds of material, but not cheap.

Even though our Joann's recently went throught a remodel and address change, it still has ugly fabric. Would love to be a buyer for that store!

I agree, could be a good thing or a bad thing. Dedicated fabric cutters/helpers at Wal-Mart, would be a good thing (if they don't have "attitude" which some employees at my Jo-Ann's seem to have) but if prices go up, which they almost surely will, that's a bad thing. Currently, fat quarters are $1.99 at Jo-Anns; same fat quarters exactly--and I do mean EXACTLY--are .99 at Wal-Mart. It will be interesting to see if outsourcing by Wal-Mart happens.

I've heard that RUMOR a number of times the last few years, and that's all it is ... a rumor ! It could happen someday, WM has a number of kiosk businesses already, so who knows ...

I'm not impressed by JoAnn's fabrics anyway, in our so-called "superstore" here they offer no more than in their regular stores. Can't imagine they would add much to WM ... except higher PRICES for mediocre fabrics !!

They seriously downsized the fabric dept about 4 years ago and moved it to the back of the store. Thread and binding selections also decreased. Driving 25 miles to a fabric store isn't feasible with the price of gas jumping over 17 cents in just the last week. Cotton prices came down a lot over the past 2 years, but fabric costs continue to rise.
I don't understand this repeated assertion that Wal-Mart has poor fabric. Maybe some Wal-Marts but our stores have always had good fabrics. The oldest store took it's fabric out for awhile but it's back now and the newest store (less than 2 years old) has always had some great fabric, 100% cotton, tightly woven, doesn't shrink excessively.....and it is much cheaper than the VERY SAME fabric at Jo-Ann's. About a year ago I bought some 100% cotton (green background with white dots) for $2.00 yd at Wal-Mart. It cut and sewed up beautifully. I loved it so much I went back and bought more just to have in my stash. Six months later Jo-Ann's had the same fabric at $5.99 yd. Fat quarters bought at Wal-Mart compare in every way to those bought at Jo-Ann's except in price: $.99 at Wal-Mart; $1.99 at Jo-Ann's.

Having said all that I still shop at Jo-Ann's; it's nearer and I can use coupons. But I don't hesitate to buy fabric at Wal-Mart, either. Some of it is better than fabric available at Jo-Ann's, and most of it is at least equal and much cheaper. We no longer have LQSs nor a Cloth World (do they still exist?) nor a Hancock's so those are not options. We do have Hobby Lobby--not very convenient to me--and of course if we choose to, we can drive 35 miles to Dallas--and get anything we want there. But in the meantime, I love that Wal-Mart has fabric!

I'm with Fabaddict, this rumor has been going around for years. Someone probably heard a person say, Joanne's should take over Wal Mart's fabric department.................and you remember the game Gossip? Wal Mart found out when they scrapped the fabric dept., they lost a large base of their customers. So it really was all about the money, in order to draw women back to the store, they had to bring in fabric and crafts again. It's the only reason I went to Wal Mart, then perhaps I'd pick up something on the way out. They have nothing I can't find someplace else.

I hope you mean a JoAnn's within a Wal-mart!
