My last two were 40x60. One was purchased as a baby shower gift and the other was for my niece that is just two weeks old. It will be plenty big enough for quilt awhile. I plan to make her another when she is big enough to have a favorite color.

For me, I guess it depends on how much work I'm putting into it and how I think it will be used. If I'm making a quick blanket for a baby, I go 36"x42ish, knowing it will be used with a bunch of other blankets in the early days. If I think it will be kept for a toddler blanket, then I go bigger. When my kids were infants, I didn't care for big blankets at all, but I did see that the babies outgrew them.

I think there is no wrong way...

The ones I have made were between 40x60 or 45x60. I like them long enough to fit crib nicely or to lay on the floor when the baby is old enough to start to crawl or begins to roll over.

I usually make all my baby quilts 45x60 unless I buy a panel piece, that way they can use it in a 6 yr crib or for a longer time.

I have done only a few but I always thought that the standard size was 45" x 36". After reading the comments, I think that bigger would be better.

Thank you for all the input! It seems like the most popular size is just under 45" wide (so the backing need not be pieced) by 60" long. I asked as I'm working on a design for a new baby quilt, and the way I have it right now it comes out to 40" x 55". So I think size-wise I'm in the right ballpark! Thanks again for the help!

After reading these posts I am going to start making them larger. Mine have usually been 36/45

I usually make them 50X60 or there about. I think of making it a size that will not be outgrown in toddlerhood
