Hi all,

I want to make a small quilt/wallhanging for my daughter's latin teacher. Her teacher is one of the most amazing teachers I've ever met. I would like to do something latin related to display in her classroom...I am coming up with nothing. Any suggestions out there?? Thanks so much!
:)

Boy that is a tough one.You did not say what level or age group she teachs?
If it is beginners how about something like a primer., with pictures. That is a picture/applique of an apple with the latin word for it, dog ,cat etc.
If it is an older class something that shows the culture that went with latin like Roman statues, buildings etc. You could have a roman key border.

You know the little wall hangings and stuff that say "live laugh love" you could do something with three "teacher" words written in the laung. Such as "Motivate, Inspire, Teach"

For my daughters summer school teacher I had a washer key chain made that said these words, and it had her name on the other side. I think that is my new favorite gift to give teachers!

OR Basic Latin

amo = I love
amas = you (singular) love
amat = he, she or it loves

I've seen the phrase like this:

amo, amas, amat

if you wanted to go all out doing something that looked like it was done in mosaic tile would be a great touch.

This is a link to a name thingy tutorial as Eddie calls it. He made it for his wife's classroom with her name but you could write something in latin on it too! When I just looked, the pics didn't show on my computer but it could just be me.

Basically, he made a plaque of small, like 3 inch squares and then used muslin to write what he wanted on it. It is beautiful and if you have issues, I would think you could PM Eddie and he would email you pics. Good luck!

Carpe diem was a popular Latin saying from Dead Poet's Society quite a few years ago. It means seize the day.

How about something motivational for the students?
veni, vidi, vici is a famous latin phrase by Julius Caesar and means I came, I saw, I conquered.
Some university mottos are:
Sapientia et doctrina. ("Wisdom and knowledge.")
Veritas vos liberabit. ("Truth will free you.")
Lux sit. ("Let there be light.")
Respice, adspice, prospice. ("Look back, look to the present, look to the future.")
Lux et veritas. ("Light and truth.")
Nil sine magno labore. ("Nothing without great effort.")

Lots of Latin out there! Have fun (I loved Latin class in HS!! :D )
