As others, I was stumped! What about the lace idea, eyelet or dotted Swiss? You could even have one of the penguins enlarged and printed on a 'girly' fabric.

Gotta put in a vote for the appliqued penguin with a pink bow!!! Love that idea.

Are you required to use both fabrics?

The second one has possibilities. I wonder how it'd look with a bit of black/white print, added to it. . . and/or maybe throw in some of the gray (blue) in sashing and a scalloped border . . . .

My goodness, you do have a challenge on your hands. It's not fabric I would choose for an infant irrespective of gender! Sorry I wouldn't have a clue where to begin because I can't see frills & flounces, buttons or bows with their choice of, what is judging by the picture, mannish looking fabric. The penguins are cute but the writing and colour combo doesn't really lend itself to a baby quilt. Good luck with this and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

No pink. It doesn't go with the supplied material. If it must have some "girly" aspects make sure you use colors that compliment the quilt. I Like the ideas of using lace.

pink is out since there is nothing to match it to. I suggested eyelet and lace. IMO, nothing tacky about either.
