I do the same...
No matter what way you do it, in the end you will eventually have at least one row to put together.

i would do it in rows it seems easier to me but that is my personal preferance

I ditto this - into 1/4s and the last seam is the horizontal one which on a bed quilt would be shorter. I also put the top and bottom borders on when the top is in 2 halves. Don't ask me why I just do!!
