I always use 2 1/2" binding. Then fold in half & sew it to the back.

2.5" is what I usually use, however, I use less when I'm using true bias.

2 1/4" for smaller projects and 2 1/2" for lg wall hangings and up. As I get older I do notice I lean towards 2 1/2" more often.

It's that ol' eye sight thing... hehe

I cut mine exactly 2 1/8 inches and fold it in half and hand sew on the back. Just a nice narrow binding.

I like 2 1/2" for my binding. I also sew the binding on the front and hand sew on the back. I have a friend who sews on back by machine then sews on the front by machine with a zig zag stitch. She made it look nice. However, when I tried it on a quilt I did not do as well. I prefer handstitching on the back by far for me as I find handstitching relaxing

It depends on how much of a binding I want to show. If I use a contrast binding and want it to be "part of the design" I use 2 1/2". If I use binding that matches that back, I use 2 1/4". But that's just me. I think you could use any size that you are comfortable with.

I also use different widths depending on the batting and on the design of the quilt. Sometimes I might like it to look more like a small border and other times I don't want it to show at all so I may use 1 3/4 " and double fold. Other times and with thick batting, I may use 2 1/2" but I always double fold.
