A walking foot is sold separately, but must be purchased for your brand of machine. Its like having feed dogs at the top of your fabric, and works with the feed dogs under your fabric.
When quilting the walking foot moves the top/bottom fabric at the same rate to you don't get wrinkles.

There is also a nice little catalog called Home Sew and they are on line too. I have seen the walking foot in there and other attachments also. I called and asked which bobbins fit my machine and they were very helpful. I liked their prices too.

I got one for my 50+ year old Singer at the dealer so your friend could check there or on Ebay. I don't know if they still do but Janome used to make Kenmores so if you have no luck in your search you can check with a Janome dealer.

A walking foot is the absolute best purchase you can make for quilting. I have an older Pfaff and purchased a Brother foot that works just fine. There generics out there that will work also. The darning foot is also used to do FMQ and it works like a dream. You can also get a generic darning foot or a "Big Foot" which is for FMQ also. There is a site, http://www.sewingmachinesplus.com that has all kinds of feet and they are not super expensive either.
That said, I wouldn't be without my walking foot for quilting and I'm learning how to FMQ with the darning foot and having a wonderful time. Hope you do too!

Here's a link to a site that has lots of parts, for machines other than Singers, but that's what I got there:

IMHO I find both feet invaluable. I use a walking foot when attaching a binding strip because it moves over bulk evenly, pressing from the top and bottom at the same time. I also use it for stitch in the ditch. I have used it with home dec and thicker fabrics too when piecing. The darning foot (or stippling foot) is great for machine quilting. Make SURE you have one with a spring-see picture-not a stationary or solid one. The spring moves with the up and down of the machine, keeping even pressure while you free motion quilt. The clear one (no spring) floats on the surface..bad. I used to have a Kenmore, and I was able to find both feet at a sewing machine supply place locally. They had universal feet. You will need your machine maker and model so they know if it is high or low shank and if it will fit-not all will. Call around to ask. FYI walking foot can run $45 to $75 and free motion with spring around $25 to $35.
No spring, no good IMHO
