Location: Cove, Oregon Hi, it says you've been a member a long time and I don't know how this works. I have a question and can't seem to find a place to ask it except to ask someone personally, like you. I am making a quilt and it calls for 4 1/4 squares cut into triangles (hour glass). I put two pieces of fabric (rst) and cut it into fours. Then I'm suppose to use the two colors of fabric and make hourglass triangles. Is there a trick to doing this or do I have to cut the squares into quarters and sew each piece to each piece? I mean, is there a trick like there is with half triangles where you draw down the middle (rst) and sew 1/4 on either side and turn it over and press it. It seems that there is probably a way to do that with quarter triangles. If you don't know, can you post this so someone could help me? Thanks, Jeanne

I would do a search on this site, upper header, click search and type in hourglass tutorial.
I am a site learner, so I need a book to look at, this may help you. Otherwise I google the same thing, just put quilt in your question.
Best wishes,
sue

If you particularly want to contact jcrow then go to search and type jcrow into the box. This will bring up her posts. Click on her name in the right hand box and then on pm to send a personal message to her.

Okay, I take two squares of different patters or colors, put them rightsides together the draw a diagonal line on one, then sew 1/4 inch seam on either side of the center line. Then cut the block in half on the drawn line. When you open it up you have two half square triangles. Then you take two more squares of different patterns and colors and do the same for them. You now have 4 half square triangles. Take two of them and put them right sides together, but make sure your seam is opposite of where you want to sew. Mark that, sew it, cut it and you have your quarter square triangles.

The easiest way to make quarter square triangle is to cut your 2 squares 1 1/4" larger than the size of the block, for example, a 4" square is the size you want to end up with, so 5 1/4" is the size you would cut. Draw a diagonal line, sew 1/4" on either side of the line, cut apart on the line, press, re-stack, repeat the diagonal line and so on, then square up. I hope I explained it well enough, if not, please PM me and I'll try again.
