I agree with Tessa, I always stitch bindings by hand as I love hand stitching BUT I think we should all do as we wish - after all as is said so often on this site, it is [u]your quilt. Whatever you do HAVE FUN!!! :)

Hand sewn bindings lay better on my quilts. When I have saved time by machine stitching, the bindings have been stiff and wavy. Just MHO.

I hand stitch done most of my bindings because I enjoy doing hand work in front of the tv. I occationally machine stitch them down if they are going to be washed a lot.

I enjoy sewing my bindings on by hand. I sew by machine on front and flip to back to sew by hand. And it turns out better for me.

I have done MANY charity quilts this way--saves lots of time so more people can have a quilt...

I love hand work but do not like stitching the binding.
So boring after doing intricate hand work.
I found a clever tute that is completely machine sewing and have used it ever since.

I think that when we are taught to do it a certain way it just sticks with us. I know the first time I machined stitched my binding I felt like I was cheating. Well let me tell you that soon passed as it sure is faster and in most cases just as nice.

I agree with you. I like the look of doing it by hand. Might only take 4 or 5 hrs. I think I just like hand work for myself.
Good question tho.

That is how I do it. Sew to back and flip to front and use a decorative stitch or blanket stitch to finish. Holds up better too in the long run.
