I bought a used Pfaff Grand Quilter and love, love it. I didn't know I would dislike the quilting process so much so I only use it for piecing, but I love the harp space. And couple of months ago I bought a 1936 Singer 201 to use as a back up and it has a long harp. Both wonderful. The Pfaff was $550 and the 201 was $55.

I paid under 2000 for my 15" Bailey. I opted to not purchase the stitch regulator. Yes, you can use it on a desk, sewing table, etc, and fmq with it. I did get a discounted machine by buying one of their classroom machines. I love mine.

Juki made a straight stitcher with a 9" throat, and it is marketed under many names. The one I have is the Brother Nouvelle1500s, which is ideal. It is branded by Baby Lock, Brother and Juki, that I have observed and it is called Brother PQ 1500 in the States.Members have said they have bought it for $500-$760. It's about $1766 here.

the smallest throat on a Bailey is 13 inches, and their cheapest machine.
it is used for quilting only. I does not have feed dogs, so you cannot sit down and sew seams on it.
I knew I would not be happy with a 9" throat because of the small quilting area. Once the quilt is rolled, it takes up space within the throat of the machine.
I have had one for 4 years and have been very happy with it.

I know both HandiQuilter and APQS make a sit down model longarm. The APQS is called the George and I have a friend that loves it. I'm not sure of the prices, but I know they are less than a longarm. I'm sure you can go online and check.

A friend just bought a Pfaff GrandQuilter on ebay $650 a few months ago. What a workhorse!!!!
