I have sewing rooms in two houses. One has a hard surface and the other one carpet. I much prefer a hard surface. I have to set my foot control on a hard surface in the carpeted room or it overheats because there is no circulation of air around it even though it has little feet on it. The carpet is too plush. This room also serves as the guest room otherwise I would take the carpet out. I have gel mats in the kitchen. I believe they came from Sam's Club but I've seen them other places too like office supply stores.

Absolutely wood. I'm a thread and scrap tosser and it's so much easier to clean up.

I'm envious that you have not one, but two sewing rooms. I agree that carpet is too much up-keep... in any room. I have my sewing machine set up at my dining room table for the time being (until I build on a sewing room) which has wooden floors. I like the idea of ceramic tile and will keep that in mind when planning my sewing room addition.

I have a basement sewing studio with insulated laminate flooring. And I have a rag area rug just to soften the space and a place for the dog to lay when she comes down to visit. I can hear pins drop and can pick them up right away, and the rest is so easy to clean with a Swiffer. My quilting room with the long arm has hardwood floor with a soft mat to stand on. No carpeting for me in a sewing space, too hard to keep clean.

I have carpet. Ohio gets cold and this room does not warm up easily for some reason. That being said I would prefer wood, linoleum or tiles. Carpets collect everything but men and money! Dirt, threads, smells (read- 4 dogs that are with me ALWAYS) While it is handy to catch all the small bits of fabric and threads for me -I use them in animal beds for shelters; it is a pain picking them out of carpet or out of the sweeper.

When I had carpet in my quilt area, I always ended up finding straight pins - THE PAINFUL WAY!! Now that I have large porcelain tile, pins are easy to find and cleaning is a breeze!

I have carpet as my sewing "room" is the back half of my large livingroom.

I have carpet, but would like to eventually change it to tile to make it easier to be maintained.
