I currently have mine in a gallon jar waiting for a project ... and the time to do the project! The make nice wreaths! You can stain them, use them as they are, or wrap bits of fabric around them to match your decor or holiday choice.

I have been in the process of redoing my sewing room and have many wooden spools from my husbands grandmother. I modgepodged the thread on and am using them for drawe pulls, the look really cute, I saw in on sewmanyways.

I bought a large old looking canning jar and filled it with wooden spools. You can find the tops with wicks online for them, and fill them with lamp oil. It makes a fun hurricane lamp!

They actually have almost no value as collectibles. Only the very old ones before paper labels and in excellent condition are worth anything and you have to sell them in bulk to make any money on it. There's a healthy craft market for wooden spools, but that's about all.
