Lightbulb Wool Mat and Freezer Paper

Today I made a great discovery that I wanted to share. I have a wool mat that I use for pressing when piecing a quilt. I make quilt labels by pressing fabric on to freezer paper and running it through my printer. Today I was preparing a piece of fabric for a label. My wool pressing mat was already on my ironing board, so I pressed the paper on to the paper using the mat. I was amazed at how much better the freezer paper stuck to the fabric. Even after I ran the fabric through the printer, it was still firmly stuck on. This would be helpful when appliqueing as well. I am sorry it took me so long to discover the trick! Hope someone else finds it useful as well.

I have a small wool mat that I tried using for pressing - I couldn't get past the barnyard smell that resulted from the heat of the iron

Well it is wool... I do love my wool mat, I find that my seams press nice and flat, and when I press yardage it stays put, it doesn't slip all over like it does on those silver covers.

I have a 17” square wool pressing mat which I love- it has never smelled bad, not from the start. It sure makes my blocks so much better pressed, one of my best - most used purchases.

I love my wool mat too - so much that I lined my entire ironing board with them and then put a thin silvercloth cover on it. But I'm glad to hear of your discovery!

I have not purchased a wool mat as of yet but have been looking. I appreciate this bit of information I am sure I will use it. Thanks so much.

In return for doing some shop samples for a LQS, I received a wool covering for my ironing board--never take it off! Yes, it does smell like a wet sheep when I spray water on fabric, and you do have to watch that you don't let starch build up cause it sorches (the starch). But I love it! (and since I'm old enough to have worn wool skirts and sweaters to school in winter--pre everything is synthetic kid, it really is just wet wool!

    emphasis mine

I'm curious did you put fabric on the mat and then iron the freezer paper on? I think that is way you meant. I suppose you could put the freezer paper on the mat and the fabric on top. Do you cut fabric and paper to fit the printer after they are stuck together?

I was impressed by pressing seams, just over a piece of wool fabric on a padded wood board.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

Thanks for the tip Innova18. I am anxious to give it a try on my next label or applique project.
