It's a personal choice.

I love print fabric. And all white would be boring for me. I usually will go into the LQS, go to the $5/yard section, and buy a backing when my quilt is ready to be backed. I used to buy in advance but I have some still waiting... so I only spend when I have the quilt ready to go. I pick something nice and close, but since I'm in the "clearance" section, I'm not going to agonize about a perfect match.

I was once there when a lady spent 30 minutes picking out a back. I understand doing that for borders and colors in general, but the back, IMO, doesn't need to perfectly match the front. Shrug.

I think it stinks that your choice of backing is juged, unless maybe it is a "World Class" show, and the prizes are in the thousands of dollars. Just my opinion.
Ditto. Especially for a wall hanging... you never see the backs of those!

I use up what I had left over from front, and make a reversable quilt. I made a lady bug printed fabric in my daughters quilt, and the cream and browns used to accent it were used on the back. Her boyfriend always made the bed with that side up, he was afraid his friends would think he was a sissy if the ladybugs showed. So I am glad I make them reversable.

For table runners I use different holiday designs for each side so it is used for 2 holidays.
Quilt backs I use sale fabrics but they do have to match the binding.
