i love seeing the quilts with white sashing and borders with the brights for the pattern. but that's not me. if i have a background, it's usually a lighter shade of the main color.

Color would be my vote - do many sloppy people around my house, DGC & dogs - light colors show the stains

    It depends on the fabric.

My favorite is ivory to light beige, tone on tone, or tiny color designs. Shirting is getting to be my favorite, but I like the civil war prints.

Depends....but I tend to stay away from whites. I really love color. But, again, it really depends on the pattern.

I like white on white mainly, but have used other backgrounds. Depends on the fabric and pattern being used.

Lately I've been using bright colors with black...really makes them pop. Never used white as a background on any quilt, usually pick a color from my focus fabric and use that. At quilt guild Monday night a lady told us to look at the dots of color on our focus fabric and use the 5th dot as a highlight color, guess you could use that for background if you wanted color. I'm planning a 2-color quilt right now and I think I'm going to use a white on white with dark green!
