So sorry for your loss. It's so very hard to lose a friend, but the quilts you make will be like having part of her live on. My favorite pattern is the simple square of a feature focus fabric alternating with a 9-patch, and you can even make that square be a snowball block. I also like the 8-pointed star block, with Eleanor Burns quick and easy flying geese technique it works up quickly and you can easily change the square center with 4-patch, 9-patch, pin wheel, etc. for variation. Hope this helps.

My go-to slam them out fast pattern is to make four patch blocks with scrappy colors and a controlled background color then to alternate that with a one patch of the same size as the four patch. The block size I use depends on the amount of stash I want to use so I don't waste fabric, but a finished 6 or 8 inch works out well. I inherited several large totes of novelty fabric from my mom which made really nice single blocks and borders. I pulled out several colors from the novelty fabric for the four patch. I add an accent border if I have lots of a color and use it for binding or pull the backing toward the front and sew it by machine. Our guild does lap to twin size quilts for foster kids and babies and these worked out perfectly. I can make one in a day and used them to practice on my longarm.

I like the warm wishes pattern available on the Linus website. It is great for prints that there isn't a lot of. Just need 3 other fabrics strip pieced of colors picked out of the print. It just takes 5/8 yard for the focus fabric for a crib size quilt.

I'm sorry for your loss. When you sew with her fabrics, it will be such a wonderful tribute. Just can't cut it is a good one. That burns up fabric in a hurry. Walkabout is another one that's quick, and good for using a focal fabric. Another quick one that I just finished in a day is Totally Triangular.
