I was told by my long arm quilter that she (and many other LAQers) prefer to have the backing seams horizontal if possible (parallel to the edge that is fastened to the leader strip). that way the quilter only has to worry about the seam for one line of quilting. If the seam is vertical, then the quilter has to worry about it on every row of quilting done on the project.

Check out the John Flynn web site and look at his method of cutting the backing fabric diagonally to increase the width.
This only works for certain sizes but is a clever way to use 45" fabric
