This is just for my own curiosity, so only answer if you want to. I know there are at least 3 accountants in the swap, with me being one. That seems like a lot for this many people, but I got into quilting because I’m a math nerd and accounting is just an extension of that. So my question: how many of us are accountants, and do you think the math and precision are part of what got you into quilting?

Hi Wesing- Retired accountant here. Never a math nerd, although geometry did make the most sense. Got into quilting out of boredom. Signed up for a sampler class before I bought my first machine. Over the years I have been delighted to see how geometry applies to the patterns and creative rulers. Who would have thought?

I'm an accountant. My first jobs out of high school were in sewing fields, and I moved on to running my own sewing business, making custom made clothing. And I discovered the only part of running my own business that I really liked was doing the book work. So after my youngest was weaned and I felt comfortable with her in daycare, I went back to school and that is what I've been doing since, 30+ years.

As the years went by and the children grew (and I stopped sewing clothing for them), I pretty much quit sewing for 10-15 years, and then got back into it around 2015 and started making quilts. I've always been a math nerd, and love the calculating part of making quilts. I find drawing up a pattern almost as fun as the sewing part.

I知 not an accountant but I致e done more than my share of bookkeeping through my working years. I could never tolerate even being once cent off. Balances had to work out perfectly. lol. I appreciate quilting precision (although I don't always manage it) and the puzzle aspect of fitting this piece with that one.

Below is a selection of fabrics for the mystery. I知 leaning to brighter colors than I usually use. The blocks aren稚 sewn together yet. I知 using my small portable and I知 way less accurate with it so they値l have wait til my regular workhorse comes out of the shop.

Wesing - I worked in accounting also. It was a true game for me to balance the clients checkbooks. one plus one always equaled two. My doodle papers were graph papers and loved making designs. Although I did not pick up quilting until I was 50 and arthritis prevented me from counted cross stitch, I so find figuring out the math while making up patterns. Since I like to use 3/8" seam allowance to make my quilts more durable, this comes in handy.
