Every year I try to have candy for the kids in the neighborhood. I was smart a few years back and got little trick or treat bags to put a few pieces in. It sure saves time when they come trouping up the driveway! Plus, I usually make 65 or so, then when I run out of bags, I quick turn off the lights and dart back into the house! This year, Halloween is on a Friday so it might be even crazier than last year!

I love Halloween. When I lived in VA I use to decorate a lot. I would sit for a whole day carving out pumpkins. The kids and adults loved them. I would dress up also just to answer the door. Now I live in a 55 and over mobile home park. I really miss seeing the kids. It's not the same as it was when I was a kid. Those horrible people that put razor blades in apples scared parents to the point where they wouldn't let their kids trick or treat like we did. My mom would make caramel apples for the "special" kids that she knew and gave candy to the rest. Those were the good old days!

My mom lives in a retirement community also, and last year she was visiting me, so we sat outside and handed out candy. She got such a kick out of it and really enjoyed seeing the kids. That's one of the things you miss when it's no longer possible to have those types of interactions. I remember as kids we lived in a rural area of Pennsylvania, and it would be just about freezing, and we'd bundle up in winter coats and mom would drive us around to some neighbors (all farmers), and we rarely got packaged candies. Mostly cookies, fresh picked apples, popcorn balls and a cup of cider! Oh, for the good old days!!

I take a vacation day for Halloween; Elisabrat you don't have to wait that long - I'll pick up a gallon of fresh cider on my way home from work - the good stuff that requires refrigeration - you can help me get 200 treat bags ready. We have a bunch of neighbors that won't hand out candy - they're fun haters - we even had an elementary school teacher on our block when we first moved in and she refused to hand out candy - go figure that one out. Oh well - we have a blast and we try our best to make it fun for kids to come get candy at our house.

MizMelly thank you for the memory of homemade treats - when I was a kid we got homemade popcorn balls and apples. We lived in the country and my mom would talk us into town to Granny's and we would trick and treat around her neighborhood and when we got done we would all dump our candy out and swap and trade for our favorites. On really cold nights we would get hot chocolate after trick or treating.

What a walk down memory lane! I love Halloween & I have a daughter born on Halloween. Growing up I always went with my older sister & our friends. We'd have a blast going to everyone's houses. We'd cover an awful huge territory. We'd always get a huge stash. One neighbor always handed out comic books, another toothbrushes (a dentist), an there was always a house that would hand out huge homemade lollypops! It was the best of times. Loved dressing up and just being a kid.
Since my daughter was born on Halloween she decorates my house every year. It's bigger than Christmas for her. That's one of the reasons I love to join the Halloween swaps or mini quilts.

decorating for Halloween? OH DEAR, yes yes I do. I get a big kick out of it. wall hangings, table runners, oh lots of hangings actually off the three doors of my sideboard.. gotta put something up there! more hangings! I love the vintage décor but yeow its not very easy to purchase. Hard on the wallet but oh so easy on the eye I think my mom was not too much into the holiday as far as making us costumes. I recall always last second putting it all together. she would say find something.. and we did. but we did killer pumpkins with dad. He would have loved those kits you buy now where you carve things to death. I always do two in his honor every year. Wolves howling at the moon! Skelletons sitting in chairs.. bats! oh yeah. Contacting my partner right now but wanted to tell you that you made me really smile Teresa. Thank you!

Here's what is hanging in my office (year round). It's not real sharp, I just took a quickie pic with my phone.

We have Halloween decorations up all year. I love planning costumes for the kids and myself. When I was a kid, there was a lady that gave those of us from the neighborhood 1 lb. candy bars, the rest of the kids got minis. There also was a lady that didn't give out candy but gave everyone a dime.
