Yep, regular Crayola-brand crayons. :) Off-brand crayons work, but the color seems to fade a bit when the fabric is ironed afterwards.
I recall reading up on using Crayons and they didn't recomend washing. They were not permenent. Did Crayons change their reciepe?

I'm not sure, moonrise washed hers after heatseating to confirm the colors didnt fade
and one of the tutorials I just posted is on crayola quilts and she said that some of the off brand crayons dont have enough pigment and will fade but she has had good luck with the Crayola brand also crayola has come out with a crayon specifically for fabric

Everything that I have been able to find says that heat will set the color and if you don't heat set it, then it will wash away.
one of the pages said to take a white 100% cotton shirt and draw a design in permanent ink and then you can color it and wash it and recolor it, sounded kinda neat, my grandchildren would LOVE that

I think I'll try this with my DGD, that's her on my avitar. She wants to make a quilt with me again, we've done a small butterfly wallhanging. She's only 6 years old, but so what, good to start young if they have the interest!

Crayola also puts out a very inexpensive set of 10 fabric markers that are heat set.

Ok I printed a butterfly on the print fabric and colored it with crayola's and color pencils, then I applique the butterfly unto the 12.5 x 12.5 block, is this allowed picture will follow...

Before I added it to the block I hand washed it with hot water to see if it would fade and this is what I ended up with...

I'm going to add a flower to the block....
