Here goes, I'll see if this picture thing works for me

jaba 06-17-2020 10:40 AM

Well that was short and not to sweet. Is there a secret to this??

Okay, thank you. Will try your instructions....hopefully here's my center

jaba 06-17-2020 12:26 PM

Yahoo! buckaroo, thank you so much!!

sewbizgirl 06-17-2020 12:28 PM

What I do is make sure my picture is very small. Big ones won't upload. Then I type my post and hit "go advanced" under it. The page will reload with a paperclip icon next to the smiley face icon. Click on the paperclip and it will open a field for you to choose the picture on your computer. Then, be sure to advance all the way to the right side of the page and click on "upload". Wait until it is uploaded. Then hit post and it should be there.

sewbizgirl 06-17-2020 12:29 PM

Oh, I see you got it! Very pretty center, Jaba!

carriem 06-17-2020 12:56 PM

Great centers TG and jaba!

Bugaboo, I look forward to seeing what you do with the new bee fabric.

My center should be done tomorrow...if not, on Friday for sure! I actually get to stay home the next two days. :)

travelinggramma 06-17-2020 01:38 PM

Love those blues Jaba - and congratulations on learning a new techy thing!

carriem 06-17-2020 01:48 PM

Some of you have mentioned a message with your centers. What should be included on this? This is my first RR so I want to make sure I send the right details :)

I decided to do a scrappy log cabin star for my center. This is what I've done so far, each block is about 1/2 done ( 8.5 inches). I started a scrappy log cabin Star quilt a few weeks ago since I have so many fall colored fabrics. For that quilt the light color is scrappy also and some of the 2.5 strips are dark and some are light so I hope to mix and match the blocks.
So I picked out my favorite darks for this RR.

This was the label I sent along with my last Row Robin quilt - It was a snowman themed quilt. It is kind of up to you as to how much info/details you want the rest of the group to add.

Hope this example helps.

jaba 06-17-2020 02:49 PM

Mona, I love the fall colors and have lots of them in my stash of fabric.
I really have no idea in my mind for this quilt so it's up to all of you. The only thing I wrote was that I thought an off white looked better with my fabric than a pure white and said that I had put some Kona Snow next to it and it was a perfect match for the light color in the batik. Also that if you chose to add another color that would be fine but please go sparingly on a yellow, not my favorite color of all time :) but a little every now and then would be okay.
Another thought from past RR's...do we keep the borders from 3-6"wide. If I remember we did every other one. If the 1st person did a 3" then the next one would do a 6" and so on. That way most of the quilts came out about the same size. Doesn't matter, just wondering??
TG mailed the center to you today...and I like your blues too!

Mona G 06-17-2020 02:54 PM

I know one of the RR I was in, each border was a different size, each round got bigger. I can't remember all the dimensions. I'm fine with whatever the group thinks works best.

givio 06-17-2020 03:35 PM

TG, beautiful center!

Bugaroo, I like the ticking background on the bee fabric. I love blues and yellows together.

I believe with the RR idea, you are letting others add to your center with their own creativity. It seems like you can send a note with your center for a few ideas that you hope that will happen to your center (or hope won't happen), but the ideas shouldn't include a broad restriction-- like telling the others in the group what type of fabric they must use. I think either cotton prints or batiks could be used. If someone wants only batiks, or only civil war, or only 30's, or only Christmas fabric, etc., then a RR would not be for them. If the group decides it's a Batik RR, well, then that would be different.

Jaba, your center is so blue, like flowers or a summer sky. Pretty! In Group 1 we talked about the size of the borders. I believe that SBG and Reba indicated that they would be no larger than 6" but could be smaller. It meant that each top could end up being larger or smaller than the others in the group, depending on what each participant decided to do for border width each round.

Mona, I love browns and fall colors. :-)

carriem, You can send something or nothing, it's up to you. Reba asked for some thoughts we would write in a journal for her. Some plan to add a label that all are asked to sign. Some send extra fabric in case someone would like to incorporate it-- but there is no rule to send anything along.

Bugaroo 06-17-2020 03:44 PM

Jaba, glad you got your picture posted. The blues are like going through the lower to upper atmosphere on into deep space.

Mona, fall is my favorite time of year. Love your colors and the small black squares really work.

Question about mailing. Are we mailing at the end of the month or just before so the recipient will receive by the end of the month? Either is fine, I just want to match what others are doing.

I was also wondering about the label. Thanks for the example. I would love to send one along with mine for all to sign their name and location.

sewbizgirl 06-17-2020 04:55 PM

Mona, love your Fall log cabin center.

I sent my center off to givio before all these great ideas came up, so mine has no note, no label! It's okay tho. My only request would be, "compliment what is already there".

is the 2nd swap finished. Please put me on round 3!

carriem 06-18-2020 05:20 AM

Thanks for the explanations on the options of what to include. :)

Mona--I love fall colors and can't wait to get your center. I already have some ideas!!

Going to exercise, then I get to sew my center...yay!! I really hope to have a picture to share before the day is over.

Here is my center

The first picture is what I dug out of the orphan blocks. This was going to be a center for a different quilt, but after making it I changed my mind and went with different colors - so this has been sitting around for 3-4 years. I also had some 3.5" wide strips of blue cut, and 12 triangles of a coordinating fabric, so I used them up too. It was still a bit too small so I added the strip of green to get it to 18.5" unfinished.

Jaba - I'm ready to ship if you are ready to receive, but if you'd prefer I wait a week I can do that too, just let me know.

Macybaby 06-18-2020 06:56 AM

Now that I've got my center ready to send off, I went back to look at Bugaroo's pictures so I can start thinking about the next round. Bugaroo, you mentioned worried that your blue was too "plain", but keep in mind that it's nice to have some "plain" in between the busier patterns.

I'd also like to ask how the participants for group 2 would feel about having some machine embroidery incorporated into a row?

carriem 06-18-2020 07:24 AM

Macybaby--love the kaleidoscope in the center of your block! Are those fabrics metallic too? I would be fine with machine embroidery...not something I do so would be fun to have it on one of my quilts. :)

No sewing yet..I got things done on my computer that I needed to (I am a Norwex consultant and have a couple parties going on on FB right now so needed to get posts scheduled for the day)... Then DH came home early for lunch today so will go out to my craft room when he heads back to work. Yay!!

Bugaroo 06-18-2020 07:34 AM

I am so oooooooing and ughhhhhhing! Macybaby your center is so royal looking. Beautiful colors.

Since we will be at our daughters until Saturday, I can't get back to sewing until next week. Good and bad. Gives me more time to "think" and redo my center. I think I may split my Dresden apart and put it in the corners and the bee, vines and leaves in the center. Still a work in progress.... in my head!

Embroidery sounds lovely to me. I like seeing what others create and blend together.

sewbizgirl 06-18-2020 09:54 AM

Beautiful center, Macybaby! Love the fussy cutting and piecing!

Maybe a yes or no on machine embroidery could be something addressed in the notes we send?

Love the pictures. Please keep them coming...

maryb119 06-18-2020 10:49 AM

Macybaby!!!! Love the center!!!!!

sewbizgirl, I have a new Pfaff Icon and I was thinking of using some embroidery if the border design allows for it in group 1. I hope that would be OK. I would only do it if it accented the border I was adding....and I would ask first.

Macybaby 06-18-2020 11:21 AM

carriem, The fabric with the circles is metallic, the rest are not.

As to adding embroidery, I'd do the same as Mary and ask first if I had an idea to add some. I like to do things like add a butterfly (or bee) here and there as accents.

travelinggramma 06-18-2020 11:42 AM

MacyBaby - absolutely love your center. I can see alot of blue lovers in this group

As for when to send - Send it out when it is ready as long as the person you are sending it to will be home to receive it. The first of the month is when everyone should have received the next project, not when you are to send it.

Embroidery - yes for me as I don't have a machine and always amazed. But I agree - PM the person and ask them directly.

another question - are we doing tracking on our mailings? I plan on it so I don't get an anxiety attack wondering just which country it went to. (We had that issue with one of the booms - the packages were going all over the place)

And it won't be long now when we start seeing pictures from Group 1's first round!!

sewbizgirl 06-18-2020 01:13 PM

TG, if you mail with a priority envelope, I think a tracking number comes with it. That's a good reminder to send your partner the tracking number when you mail, so they can watch for it and will know where it is.

Embroidery for me is a no. I just don't like it. I do love hand embroidery, tho. I am probably the only one in both groups who doesn't like machine embroidery, so please forgive me, those of you with multi-thousand dollar embroidery machines! :P

I am laughing - A few years ago we were in Florida and had a meet-up with a number of QB members ( Jaba was one). A few DH came along. We met at a Quilt store where of course we gals went shopping and the men stayed in the meeting room and got to know each other. We followed that with a wonderful lunch with great conversation.
On the way home my DH asked what I had paid for my last machine - a used Bernina Record from 60's. I said $300 why? He said " I will never mention money again when it comes to your quilting. Do machines really cost in the 10s of thousands??"" And he hasn't!!

Well I am not done yet but have a good start. I am the one who asked if it was ok that I do a rectangle center. Here is my 12" main block...completed block to come in the morning. Just need to make 6 more 3" blocks...

sewbizgirl 06-18-2020 02:51 PM

I like that, Carrie! Your fabrics came together beautifully.

oldcatlady 06-18-2020 04:00 PM

I've wanted to do a RR for years. I was off the board for awhile and decided to hop on today to see what was going on and see I missed it! LOL. I'll be watching. :)

givio 06-18-2020 04:47 PM

Oh, excellent, carriem! The yellow looks just right with those cool colors. Nice pattern!
Macybaby, That white on white really pops in your picture. Is it a Jinny Beyer stripe in the center?
No, SBG, you aren't the only one-- I've sent a note along with my center saying that I don't prefer embroidery. :-)
TG, I think it will be a few weeks before Group 1's first round pictures show up. Some of us haven't posted pictures of our centers, and I think several have not been mailed yet.

oldcatlady, keep us in mind and check back about another RR in case one starts in December.

Bugaroo 06-18-2020 05:25 PM

I agree with sewbizgirl, Carrie. The colors really complement each other and the yellow is wonderful. Very pretty.

Macybaby 06-19-2020 02:46 AM

Givio, that is not a GB border, though I do have quite a few of her designs, I really like working with it.

But now I'm rethinking if I want to use this center for the RR. Two reasons - 1 - it might be harder to find fabric that looks good with it, and 2 - I found about 3 yards of the border fabric that I used in the center, and I'd love to use it in the quilt to tie it all together.

A while back I made a quilt using the Halo pattern for inspiration, and I really liked that center. I gave that quilt away, so I could use that pattern to make anther center for this one.

jaba 06-19-2020 08:03 AM

macybaby, anytime you are ready to send it fine. It'll just give me more time to ponder...
Embroidery is fine with me if the center or round calls for it. Lots of times it just fits and turns out beautiful.
Just finished 2 quilts for customers and I have bits and pieces all over my sewing room. May be a clean up today for sure. I have 1 finished to the flimsy stage for another client but have to decide on how to make the back. This one is the biggest I've ever made, 103" x 122", it will certainly stretch my long arm and it wears me out just moving it around. Kind of intimidating :)
Beautiful centers in both groups, looking forward to seeing each round and how they progress.

Here it is. Finished size 12"x18" (well 12 1/2"x18-1/2" w/seam allowance).

Bugaroo--do you want me to go ahead and put it in the mail tomorrow? I know you said you were traveling...

sewbizgirl 06-19-2020 09:26 AM

Great center, Carrie! Let's get this show on the road...

I'm so excited that Givio's center is supposed to arrive today! I can play!

carriem 06-19-2020 10:06 AM

"*For the Record*, our member Bugaroo has been called ..."

I caught that as soon as I posted and edited it...but those who get notifications probably got the original post...sorry about that!!!

sewbizgirl 06-19-2020 11:24 AM

No problem, Carrie. Even people who have known me as Sewbiz in the Boom threads for years still call me 'Showbiz'. Bug is fairly new to the board and I didn't want her name to be misunderstood.

I have a (maybe annoying) habit of shortening other people's names, as I just did with Bug! That may bother others too. I hope they will tell me if it does.

No biggie!

Mona G 06-19-2020 11:55 AM

Carriem, great center I think I get yours for the last round. It will be interesting to see what it looks like when I get it
