Macybaby on this block, which center do you like better?

Janice McC 08-07-2019 02:40 AM

A swapper has asked whether or not she may make "bonus blocks" for someone. Everyone is obligated to make one single block using a good portion of a person's f8. The goal is not to make as many blocks as possible from an f8. However, if you've made a block for someone and have enough left over for another block you wish to give the owner, feel free. Just please keep in mind that shipping packages have a limit as to the number of blocks they will hold. I use the padded envelopes and for those in both groups with combined shipping, it's already a tight squeeze. So everyone, please don't go overboard with the "bonus" blocks. Thanks!

Queen - I like the light center better - but either would work.

I'm so looking forward to getting a start this weekend. I'm taking tomorrow off work so DH and I can go to the Sioux Empire Fair. Though we've lived in SD for 16 years, this will be the first time we make it to that fair. But then this spring was the first time we made it to the Bad Lands and Rushmore since we've lived her too!

terriamn 08-07-2019 09:49 AM

Hav love my block, it is adorable. Thank you

Macybaby, 3 years ago was my first time visiting Mt. Rushmore. Can’t Believe something that beautiful was only a 10 hour drive away. In October we are going to visit Zion Nat’l Park for a day

Good morning, Early birds. I'm having a lot of trouble with the gallery this morning so bear with me. Pix either aren't posting at all or they are posting oddly, against the rules I designed for them. Since this is a new development, I suppose it's a Weebly issue. I'll try again later.

moonrise 08-08-2019 02:20 AM

Got my fabrics matched up and washed for all the F8s. As soon as I get up this evening (I sleep days), I've got to finish up a few things for Saturday's craft fair, then hopefully I'll have a few minutes of free time to make a block or two. :)

I normally don't start my craft fairs this early, but with DH's finger vs. table saw injury (and the outrageous ER/surgery/hospital bills that followed), I didn't have much of a choice. I seriously need to learn to sew fingers instead of fabric. It obviously pays a whole lot more! :D

On the good side, the results of the surgery were actually better than the surgeon's "best case" scenario. The doctor said that the "worst case" scenario would be that DH would lose the end of his finger. "Best case" would be that the finger would be fixable, but that the fingernail would never grow back.

In the end, DH was able to keep his finger, and the fingernail actually started growing back about 3 weeks after surgery. The nail is shaped funny, and like the (very surprised) surgeon said, "It won't win any beauty contests", but any fingernail is better than none at all. :)

DH really, really got lucky. <3

(P.S. I would post a photo, but it's waaaaayyy too graphic! LOL!)

Libster 08-08-2019 02:27 AM

Moonrise, I'm sure glad to hear that your DH's finger is far exceeding his doctor's expectations.

Two for Libster

And one for Moonrise. I thought the simple design will be great for a bag. I will enclose the extra fabric for a pocket or two.

I am so excited, I am loving the blocks so far.

Quick request when taking pix so that everyone can see your work better. Please try to take them face on rather than at an angle. I have an 18x18 inch piece of cardboard that I covered with an old piece of flannel, taping the edges to hold it in place. Anyway, I can smooth my blocks out and stand it up virtually vertically on a cabinet or dresser or whatever, leaning against the wall, and the block will not slip off. Super easy to use and takes 3 minutes to make and I can take it down when done. You could even pin the blocks to a pillow or cushion and do the same.

Will reopen the gallery when I get home now that we've got some pix to share. Thanks.

This is such a great idea. one I will definitely use. It will also take the shadow out of the equation when photographing the blocks.

Moonrise so glad Dh’s finger is healing so well.

Absolutely beautiful day here. Sitting in porch sipping on my coffee. Will head back to lake after rush hour, hope it’s as nice there

Here’s a finish from the Dune Boom, I think. I already made a pink one from this swap and I have to make a few more blocks to finish the third one which will probably be a combo of the pink and blue. They are smaller 48” X 48”, it is difficult for me to wrangle anything much bigger. Tying up as many loose ends as I can but I have loose ends to my left and to my right. I seem to specialize in beginnings! I wasn’t sure where to put this Janice.

Janice McC 08-08-2019 08:31 AM

I just love that soft blue and white. Beautiful finish! I'll add it to the Completed Projects gallery. :) Thank you, GramE.

Looks like the gallery problems have resolved themselves so I'm going to give it a try again. Fingers crossed!

Pretty quilt, GramE. I see my 'basket'! It was a beautiful fabric to work with.

It is nice to work with. It was a part of Joann’s premium quilting line, one of the first offerings. And it sold out fast in my store. I ran out and actually got some in Louisville via my DIL when she was visiting her sister.

terriamn 08-08-2019 01:30 PM

Very pretty Gram E, who is this one for.

i am making the Main Street blocks BOM with Pat Sloan. Only using fabric from my stash. Can’t say it will be mt favorite quilt but we are on just finished block 9 and I am current. Happy with that

Macybaby 08-08-2019 01:41 PM

I've been looking over the fabrics and requests. I'm going to need to pull out my fat quarters to see if I have a match for a few of them. At least I have plenty of white and wow fabric.

hav4boys 08-08-2019 02:38 PM

Teriamn, I am doing that one too. It is definitely not my favorite and I did it with my stash too.

You are right about that! Only word that beats current is done or finished.

well, I’m having an unexpected lunch with 2 of my sisters, so I think I will give it to the one who just moved. I might not see her again for a while and she turned 77 in May. I may keep this boom quilt for myself. I’m liking the blue I chose. And it has a soft light fleece backing that I think she will like.

I've been collecting Pat Sloan's Main St. blocks too, but not made any yet. I thought I might use some of the patterns for boom blocks.

Queen Barbie, you sure are turning out the blocks! Where do you get your block patterns? Most I have never seen before.

My package is supposed to come on Sat... then I can join you ladies and make blocks too!

The one for GramE is a flower block I got off of the Quilting Board. The yellow block was going to be a twelve crowns block but didn't have enough yellow so I turned it into partial sun blocks. The last two are from a quilting book called The women of the bible that I received from a lady here on the Quilt board along with blocks from the book and scraps. Here are pictures of what I did with all the blocks I received from her. I ended up donating the quilts.

Janice McC 08-08-2019 11:57 PM

QBJ, you've been busy. Lovely quilt blocks. I especially like the one for GramE with it's touch of blue. Beautiful. Pretty donation quilts as well. Congrats!

Also: problems persist with the gallery. Blocks are duplicating for some reason and I cannot delete them and others don't show up at all. Bear with me please.

GramE 08-09-2019 02:22 AM

Oh my, QBJ, my block is wonderful! That touch of blue is perfect! Thank you, thank you.

sewbizgirl 08-09-2019 04:34 AM

terriamn 08-09-2019 05:33 AM

Nice pictures everyone!

I spend a while with my stash - digging through totes of fat quarters and other smaller yardages. I need to do that more often, I find stuff I've forgotten I have. I didn't find some fat quarters I know i have, so that means I've got more tucked in somewhere else. I bought a set of 144 different tonal fabrics from Craftsy a while ago - and I know I still have most of them - somewhere. They were in a box I kept tripping over. Box is gone so I figure I stuffed them into a tote. I know I've got some more odd-ball colors with that set.

sewbizgirl 08-09-2019 08:56 AM

Lovely blocks and grandkids!

Sewbiz...I had the same idea about using some of Pat's blocks, even printed a few out already! :o

Queen, love your blocks!

Have4, really like how you centered the eagle, and your grandson is adorable!

Janice McC 08-09-2019 12:23 PM

Hav, your two grands are precious. The fire truck pic would be wonderful framed! His smile lights up the world. <3. And these two blocks are beautiful. I’ll add them into the gallery as soon as I can get it to behave.

H4b, great blocks, your Gras are just plain adorable. You are so lucky they live close by.

Stopped by Minnesota’s largest quilt store this afternoon. Was on a very limited time frame but managed to snag a very pretty light green tonal. Will probably head back up there next week with my sister instead of my hubby. VBG

Mona G 08-09-2019 06:58 PM

Lots of great blocks already. I am out of town for a family reunion so won't start on the blocks until next weekend.

Oh yes, I most definitely do love them! Thank you, QBj! All these gorgeous blocks and I don't even have my F8s yet. Maybe today.

jaba 08-10-2019 05:52 AM

hav4boys, love the star block, I'm a little partial to them, thank you so much. F8's should be here Monday so I can start making blocks.
My house is pretty quiet this morning, everyone left at 6 a.m. to start their trip home.

I'm really like all I'm seeing so far!

Here is my first one for jaba. This one took all but a few slivers of the focus fabric. And with a batik, I could use both sides which I needed to do with this one.
